CHAMPAIGN – The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley tennis team gained one match victory in its 8-1 loss to Champaign Central.

Sophie Hafer/Rose Williams won the No. 1 doubles match 8-2.

"We have been working on their intensity at the net and using the alleys as much as possible, and they did a great job with those skills and really stepped it up for us," GCMS head coach Cindy Petersen said.

"The girls played so much better and were excited about their games. Many of them came to the fences during coaching crossovers and were smiling and saying how much our net drills and practices have helped them with their games. It was nice to see them enjoying the sport and smiling while playing."

Hafer lost 6-0, 7-5 in singles play.

"She played the best game of her season against Olivia Dodds, who is one of the area’s better players," Petersen said. "Sophie just kept playing a very aggressive game, and it started to get in her opponent’s head a bit, and you could see the difference in the second set with the close score. The coach from Central was very complimentary of Sophie's playing style and her upbeat personality on the courts."

Estelle Keigher/Lexi Wilfong and Kelsi Reynolds/Jessica Mueller each lost their doubles matches 8-6.

What a statement they made in getting that many games from some very good double teams," Petersen said. "I was so proud of how hard they played and how much better their net plays have gotten."

In other singles matches, Talley Rouley lost 6-1, 6-0, Reynolds lost 6-0, 6-1, Rachel Harmet lost 6-0, 6-2, Lauren Duquette lost 6-0, 6-0 and Lanie Celeschi lost 6-0, 6-0.

"Overall, it was a great night for our program," Petersen said. "We are starting to see some overall improvement in the entire team and things are coming together. We are learning. It was so great to see the girls so up and excited even after a loss because I think they know they can continue to compete at these levels."
