CHAMPAIGN – The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley tennis team finished its season on Friday at the IHSA Class 1A Champaign Central Sectional.
"Although the girls have improved tremendously throughout the season, we were not able to get past the first round," GCMS head coach Cindy Petersen said.
Singles players Kelsi Reynolds and Talley Rouley and doubles players Rose Williams/Sophie Hafer all played against Champaign Central teams who ended up winning the sectionals.
"(There was) some very tough competition for sure," Petersen said.
Estelle Keigher/Lexi Wilfong lost to Watseka.
"This was their third time to play this duo, and although they were able to secure some points against them, they just couldn't seem to get over the hump," Petersen said.
Williams/Hafer lost 6-2 in the first set before losing 7-5 in a 6-6 tiebreaker in the second set. Their opponents would go on to take fourth place and go to state.
"So I think it speaks very highly of the quality of play these two ladies put on the court," Petersen said. "It was definitely a learning year for our team. The girls always played hard and continued to work on their games until the very end. I look forward to seeing how our team develops for next year."
