RANTOUL – The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley tennis team gained its first victory of the season via 5-4 score over Rantoul 5-4.
"It was a great night for the girls," GCMS head coach Cindy Petersen said. "They have been working so hard at trying to win a team match this year and it paid off last night. It was good to see them fight for a solid win."
Sophie Hafer won her singles match 6-3, 6-2, for the Falcons. Hafer and Rose Williams won their doubles match 8-3.
"Special shout out to Sophie Hafer for securing two wins for us last night," Petersen said. "She has been working really hard at developing her two handed back hand to add a different dimension to her game and she used it a lot to help win her singles match. She and Rose played a great game of doubles as well as they are preparing to play doubles at sectionals next week."
Talley Rouley won 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, Rachel Harmet won 6-1, 6-2 and Karson Davis won 6-2, 4-6, 10-3.
Williams lost her singles match 6-3, 6-2, and Kelsi Reynolds lost 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, Estelle Keigher/Lexi Wilfong won 8-1 and Abby Haper/Susan Harmet lost 8-4.
"Talley and Karson really had to dig deep and get their wins as they had to go to set breakers, but they kept their cool and just focused on getting a point at a time," Petersen said. "After Talley lost her first match, we had a talk at the fence and I basically told her she needed to start playing her aggressive offensive game instead of only defending. She listened and came out a different player for the second match.
"I was excited to see that freshman Karson Davis could perform under pressure and secure a win for us. I look forward to seeing her develop as a player for our program. Rachel Harmet played a solid match for us as well."
In exhibition play, Paige Shelton/Jessica Mueller won 8-5 and Lauren Duquette/Mady Price won 8-2.
