DEWEY — Verlen Eugene Kelly, 89, of Dewey, died at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, at his home.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City with the Rev. John Tennyson officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery in Gibson City with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 568. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home.
Mr. Kelly was born Oct. 19, 1929, in Decatur, the son of Peter John and Edythe (Bowers) Kelley.
Surviving are his daughters, Patricia (Robert) Baxter of Ohio, Laurie (Patrick) Baird of California and Karen Gulleson of Colorado; his sons, Peter Kelly of California and Devon Kelly of Dewey; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several cousins, including Evelyn Kelley and Mary (Jerry) Holsten of Gibson City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joyce Thompson.
Mr. Kelly married Helen Starke and later married Lisa (Bozzelli), and she preceded him in death.
Mr. Kelly served in the U.S. Navy from April 1946 to Dec. 1, 1974. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. government as a civilian employee. He was a member of the Gibson City American Legion post and was a NASCAR enthusiast.
His family would like to thank Harbor Light Hospice for their care the last few months.
