PAXTON — A group of local residents is working to find ways to raise money for the Paxton Park District to save its financially troubled swimming pool.

A “Save the Paxton Pool” Facebook page was created last week following the park board’s decision to discontinue offering open swim in the daytime or on weekends this summer. As a result of financial constraints, among other reasons, open swim will instead only be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. every weeknight at Coady Park’s swimming pool.

Besides finding long-term solutions to raise enough money to keep the pool open more often, the group of residents is trying to find a short-term fix to allow it to be open more often, particularly in the daytime, this summer. Fundraisers or business sponsors are being considered.

“Our main goal is find a way to generate more attendance and allow a financial support system in place to prevent further problems before they come to where it is at this moment,” one of the group’s members said on the Save the Paxton Pool Facebook page.

The group met for the first time Monday night to discuss ideas. A second meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 22, at the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites in Paxton.

“This meeting will be to get a few events in the works and start a committee,” the Save the Paxton Pool Facebook page said.

The hope is that if enough funds can be raised, the park board will reconsider discontinuing the pool’s daytime hours this summer at its next meeting in May.
