ONARGA — A 72-year-old Gilman man was killed Wednesday when his car was struck by a passenger train just a couple of miles south of his home.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said John Nath was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. at the scene of the collision. No autopsy will be performed.

Cheatum said Nath was the only person in the car, which was destroyed.

"The dashboard, the wheels — it was in a million pieces," Cheatum said.

No passengers or employees in the Amtrak train that struck the car were injured, the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The train was headed south when it collided with Nath’s car at a railroad crossing just north of Onarga on County Road 1600 North, west of U.S. 45, according to the sheriff’s department.

No other details about the accident were released by the coroner or sheriff’s department. Sheriff Derek Hagen did not immediately return a message requesting further information.

The sheriff’s department and Canadian National Railroad officials continue to investigate the accident.
